Do fatigue mats really help?
Recently, there’s been a lot of talk about whether fatigue mats really help. They say in retail situations, this type of mat is almost certainly going to be part of your equipment as you stand and scan prices. In factory settings, they say your fatigue mat can sometimes be your best friend. But are the health benefits as sound as everyone claims? Let us take a look.
Feet
Standing for eight hours is never fun, even with a half hour break and two fifteen minute breaks. A fatigue mat is supposed to give proper support for your feet to reduce the impact the standing has on your body. On a properly maintained fatigue mat, studies show that the impact of standing on the tile floors is greatly reduced, increasing the mood and lessening the pain of the employees.
Legs
The impact on the knees is also pretty hard felt when standing on tile. Especially in confined spaces where not much room is given to move, people’s knees will occasionally lock inadvertently, and this can lead to serious problems down the road. The fatigue mat will allow for movement while you stand to help keep your knees from locking while you’re on your feet for long periods of time. This will help the joints to remain lubricated even as you stand for hours. Your thighs and calves also are saved from stress by this type of mat—the shock that would normally be shooting through your feet and on up through your body is lessened by your muscles and tendons.
Back
Having to stand hunched over is a problem especially for taller people. But rubber mats will give a little relief from that by supporting the angle you have to stand at. As long as the mat is in good condition, the strain you put on your legs and back will be reduced greatly by the mat. If you are shorter you may not have as many problems with your back; dependent on your posture.
Posture
The fatigue mat will help you with your posture by keeping your feet level. You just need to watch the way you place your feet when you stand—your fatigue mat can’t help you if you are standing at an odd angle with your knees hyperextended. The fatigue mat encourages you to be fluid and flexible in your stance so you can stoop or bend to reach for items with ease.
