Foam Rubber
Foam rubber is also known as sponge rubber, because of its spongy consistency, or latex foam, because of the way it is manufactured. This form of rubber is actually made from a chemical compound known as polyurethane. Polyurethane is used to create a wide variety of foams and adhesives. One of the most flexible and widely used forms of urethane is foam. It is mixed into a froth and when it dries it contains about eighty-five percent air. It is very porous, absorbing liquids like a sponge.
This type of rubber is typically used for mattresses, pillows, and seat cushions. A soft yet durable substance, it holds its shape well and bounces back from stress. It is cheaply made and used in many industries. Despite its comfort and versatility, it is fairly inexpensive, and can be purchased at nearly any craft store. This type of rubber is typically sold in large sheets for arts and crafts, and can be cut into just about any shape with a box cutter or sheetrock knife; can also be found in varying thicknesses. It can be used as a cheap and effective insulation as well.
